Post-Care After Dental Rehabilitation Under General Anaesthesia for Children
Dental treatment under General Anaesthesia (GA) is sometimes the safest and most comfortable option for young children, especially when multiple procedures are needed or the child is unable to cooperate during dental treatment. At Toothway Dental, we ensure that every step—from evaluation to recovery—is handled with the utmost care, comfort, and safety.
Here’s a detailed guide for parents on what to expect after your child’s dental rehabilitation under GA and how to ensure a smooth recovery at home.
Immediately After the Procedure
Once the dental rehabilitation is complete, your child will be monitored in the recovery area until fully awake and stable.
It’s completely normal for your child to feel drowsy, dizzy, or irritable for a few hours after waking up. Allow plenty of rest and quiet time at home for the rest of the day.
Avoid school, outdoor play, or physical activity for 24 hours. Keep a close watch on your child until alertness, coordination, and appetite return to normal.
Diet and Hydration
- First 3 hours: Do not give anything by mouth.
- Start with small sips of water or clear fluids once your child is fully awake.
- Move on to soft, cool foods such as curd rice, mashed banana, soups, smoothies, or oats.
- Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods for 24 hours.
- Regular diet can usually be resumed the next day.
Encouraging hydration is very important during recovery. Small, frequent sips of fluids are better tolerated than large amounts at once.
Medications
At Toothway Dental, we will prescribe pain relief and antibiotics if needed. Give these medicines exactly as directed.
- If vomiting occurs within 30 minutes of giving a dose, you may repeat it once.
- Avoid giving any over-the-counter medicines unless approved by your dentist.
Mouth and Nose Care
It is quite common to notice a small amount of blood-tinged saliva or mucus after the procedure. Don’t worry—this can appear more than it actually is because saliva and nasal mucus mix with traces of blood.
A mild ooze from the nose or mouth may occur due to the breathing tube (intubation) used during general anaesthesia. This is normal and usually stops within a few hours.
- Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw for 24 hours.
- Gentle brushing can be resumed the next morning.
- If stainless steel crowns were placed, avoid sticky foods like chewing gum or toffee.
- If teeth were extracted, feed your child soft foods on that side and avoid disturbing the site.
Behaviour and Recovery
As the anaesthetic effects wear off, your child might be sleepy, cranky, clingy, or disoriented. These effects are temporary.
A mild sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough can occur due to the breathing tube used during the procedure—it typically settles in a day or two.
Encourage plenty of rest, fluids, and light meals for a smooth recovery.
When to Call Your Dentist
Contact Toothway Dental or return to the hospital if you notice any of the following:
- Persistent or heavy bleeding from mouth or nose
- Continuous vomiting or inability to keep fluids down
- Difficulty breathing or excessive sleepiness
- Fever above 101°F lasting more than 24 hours
- Severe pain not relieved by prescribed medicines
Follow-Up and Oral Care
A review visit is usually scheduled after one week to ensure proper healing and comfort.
- Continue brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Encourage healthy dietary habits and regular dental check-ups.
- Your child’s long-term oral health depends on early preventive care and consistent follow-up.
