Post-Care After Nitrous Oxide Inhalation Sedation for Children

Nitrous Oxide Inhalation Sedation — often known as laughing gas — helps children and adults feel calm and relaxed during dental treatment. It is one of the safest and most effective forms of conscious sedation in dentistry, especially for kids who are anxious or have a strong gag reflex.

After your child’s dental procedure under nitrous oxide sedation, a few simple post-care steps ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery.

Understanding Nitrous Oxide Recovery

Nitrous oxide works quickly and wears off just as fast once the gas is stopped. Your child will be given 100% oxygen for a few minutes at the end of the procedure to clear any remaining gas from the lungs.

Most children feel completely normal within 5–10 minutes. Still, certain safety measures must be followed for the rest of the day.

1. Eating and Drinking After Sedation

  • Wait 30–45 minutes before offering food or drink.
  • Start with clear fluids or a light snack like fruit, toast, or soup.
  • Avoid heavy, spicy, or oily meals immediately after the procedure.
  • If local anesthesia was used, wait until numbness wears off to avoid cheek or lip biting.

2. Rest and Recovery

  • Allow your child to rest quietly at home for a few hours.
  • Normal routine can usually resume by evening or the next day.
  • Avoid vigorous play, outdoor activity, or sports for the rest of the day.
  • Encourage hydration with small sips of water.

3. Possible Mild Effects After Sedation

A few temporary effects may occur rarely:

  • Mild drowsiness or a dreamy feeling.
  • Slight irritability or emotional sensitivity.

These usually settle quickly with rest.

4. Pain or Discomfort

  • If mild discomfort is present, use prescribed pain relief as directed.
  • Do not give any medication not advised by the dental team.

5. What to Avoid

  • Do not allow eating or drinking unsupervised until fully alert.
  • Avoid strenuous activities, swimming, or outdoor play on the same day.
  • No hot foods or drinks until numbness is completely gone.

6. Oral Hygiene After the Procedure

  • Brushing and rinsing can be resumed gently the next day unless otherwise advised.
  • If fillings or extractions were done, follow specific instructions given by the dentist.

7. When to Call Your Dentist

Contact your dental team if you notice:

  • Persistent vomiting or excessive sleepiness.
  • Difficulty breathing or unusual behavior that does not improve.
