What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a small titanium post — similar in shape to a screw — that is surgically placed into the jawbone in the position of a missing tooth. Over a period of 3 to 6 months, the titanium fuses with the surrounding bone in a process called osseointegration, creating a stable, permanent foundation. A custom-made crown, bridge or denture is then secured onto the implant, restoring the full appearance and function of the original tooth.
Unlike dentures, implants do not slip or require adhesive. Unlike a dental bridge, they do not require the grinding down of adjacent healthy teeth. An implant functions exactly like a natural tooth root — it stimulates the jawbone, prevents bone loss, and provides a stable base for a restoration that looks, feels and bites just like your own teeth.
With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime.
Implant Solutions Available at Toothway Dental, Gachibowli
Single Tooth Implant
A single missing tooth is replaced with one implant post and one custom crown. The crown is precision-matched to the colour, shape and size of your surrounding teeth — making the result completely indistinguishable from a natural tooth. This is the most natural and long-lasting solution for a single missing tooth, preserving the jawbone and protecting adjacent teeth from shifting.
Multiple Teeth Implants
When several adjacent teeth are missing, implants can support a fixed bridge without involving any healthy neighbouring teeth. Two or more implants are placed to support a multi-unit bridge spanning the gap — a stable, permanent solution that restores full chewing function and a natural smile line.
This approach avoids the bone loss that occurs under conventional bridges and eliminates the instability and discomfort of a removable partial denture.
Implant Supported Dentures — Full Arch Restoration
For patients who have lost most or all teeth in an arch, implant-supported dentures offer a life-changing alternative to conventional removable dentures. Just 2 to 4 strategically placed implants anchor the denture firmly in place — eliminating the movement, clicking and food restrictions that come with conventional dentures.
At Toothway Dental, our prosthodontist specialises in both BPS (Biofunctional Prosthetic System) dentures and implant-retained solutions — providing the most sophisticated and comfortable full-arch restorations available in Hyderabad.
Bone Grafting — Making Implants Possible for More Patients
Successful implant placement requires adequate jawbone volume and density. When a tooth has been missing for some time, the underlying bone naturally reduces in volume. Bone grafting rebuilds this lost bone — creating the foundation needed for a stable implant.
At Toothway Dental in Gachibowli, bone grafting is performed in-house by our specialist team. We use autogenous, allograft and synthetic graft materials depending on the individual clinical requirement. Bone grafting is completed before implant placement, with a healing period of 3 to 6 months before the implant can be positioned.

Dental Implants vs Bridges vs Dentures — An Honest Comparison
Three ways to replace a missing tooth — and why implants are usually the best long-term investment.
| Factor | Dental Implant | Dental Bridge | Denture |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feels like | Natural tooth — no difference | Fixed but can feel bulky | Removable — never feels natural |
| Adjacent teeth | Not involved — independent | Requires grinding healthy teeth | Not involved |
| Bone preservation | Yes — stimulates jawbone | No — bone loss continues below | No — bone loss accelerates |
| Eating | Unrestricted — bite normally | Most foods possible | Restrictions — hard/chewy foods difficult |
| Stability | Completely fixed, zero movement | Fixed — no movement | Can slip or move — adhesive needed |
| Lifespan | 20+ years with care — often lifetime | 10–15 years — then needs replacement | 5–8 years — refitting needed over time |
| Maintenance | Brush and floss like natural teeth | Special floss threaders needed | Daily removal and cleaning |
| Cost | Higher upfront, lowest over lifetime | Moderate — involves multiple crowns | Lowest upfront, highest over lifetime |

Your Dental Implant Journey at Toothway Dental — Step by Step
Implant Consultation
A comprehensive assessment of your oral health, jawbone density and medical history. X-rays or a CBCT scan are taken to precisely evaluate bone volume. You receive a full treatment plan, timeline and cost estimate at this appointment.
Bone Grafting (if required)
If jawbone volume is insufficient, a bone graft is performed and allowed to heal for 3 to 6 months before implant placement. Not all patients require this step — your implantologist will confirm at consultation.
Implant Placement
The titanium implant post is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthesia. The procedure typically takes 45 to 90 minutes. A temporary restoration may be fitted. Most patients return to normal activity the following day.
Osseointegration — Healing
Over 3 to 6 months, the implant fuses with the surrounding bone — a natural biological process called osseointegration. This creates the stable, permanent foundation for your final restoration.
Abutment Placement
Once the implant has integrated, a small connector piece called an abutment is attached to the implant. This forms the link between the implant post and your final crown, bridge or denture.
Final Restoration
Your custom crown, bridge or implant-supported denture is fitted onto the abutment. It is precision-matched to your natural tooth colour and bite. The result is a permanent, fully functional replacement tooth.
Review & Aftercare
A follow-up appointment confirms the fit, bite and aesthetics of your restoration. You receive full aftercare instructions and a long-term maintenance plan to protect your implant investment.
Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Most adults who are missing one or more teeth are candidates for dental implants. The most important factors are jawbone density and overall oral and general health. Conditions that previously excluded patients from implants — such as bone loss — can often be addressed through bone grafting before the implant is placed.
| Good candidates for implants | Factors that need assessment first |
|---|---|
| Adults with one or more missing teeth | Bone loss — may be addressable with bone grafting |
| Patients with healthy gums | Active gum disease — must be treated first |
| Non-smokers or patients willing to quit | Smoking — reduces success rates, increases complications |
| Patients with adequate jawbone density | Uncontrolled diabetes — must be stabilised first |
| Adults whose jawbone has finished developing | Certain medications (bisphosphonates) — require specialist assessment |
| Patients seeking permanent tooth replacement | Active cancer treatment — timing of implants must be planned carefully |
How to Care for Dental Implants
Implants that are well cared for routinely last 20 years or more. The care routine is simple — very similar to looking after natural teeth.
Daily Care
- Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste
- Floss daily around the implant using implant-specific floss or an interdental brush
- Use an antibacterial mouthwash to reduce bacteria around the implant site
- A water flosser (oral irrigator) is excellent for cleaning around implants
Protect Your Investment
- Attend regular check-ups — your dentist monitors the implant, gum health and crown condition
- Avoid biting very hard objects — ice, hard sweets, nutshells — which can crack the crown
- If you grind your teeth at night, wear a night guard to protect the implant crown
- Stop smoking — smoking significantly reduces long-term implant success rates
