Adventure Starts Here …!

Why Should My Baby See a Dentist So Early?

Most parents assume dental visits begin when all the teeth are through — or when a problem appears. Both assumptions mean starting too late.

The first dental visit, ideally around the time of the first tooth (6 to 12 months), is not about treatment. It is about education, prevention and relationship building.

At this appointment, Dr. Shanthan Reddy assesses how the teeth and gums are developing, checks for early signs of Early Childhood Caries (ECC), and gives parents specific guidance on feeding, cleaning and habits — tailored to your baby’s actual situation, not generic online advice.

Just as importantly, the first visit begins building your child’s relationship with dental care before anxiety has a chance to form. Children who attend regularly from infancy are significantly less likely to develop dental phobia — because the dental chair never becomes unfamiliar or frightening.

The investment at 12 months is a prevention strategy that pays dividends for the next 20 years of your child’s dental health.

What Happens at Your Baby’s Dental Appointment at Toothway Dental?

1

Welcome & Settling In

The first minutes are spent allowing your baby to feel comfortable in the environment — no rushing, no sudden movements. Your baby sits on your lap or is held by you throughout. Nothing happens without your baby showing signs of readiness.

2

Tooth & Gum Assessment

Dr. Shanthan gently examines the erupted teeth and gum tissue for signs of decay, abnormal eruption patterns, bite development concerns or frenum issues. The examination is brief and gentle — often completed in under 2 minutes.

3

Feeding & Diet Guidance

Feeding practices are one of the most significant factors in early childhood dental health. Dr. Shanthan advises on bottle feeding habits, breastfeeding, introduction of solid foods, juice and sugar consumption — tailored to your baby’s age and current habits.

4

Cleaning Demonstration

Dr. Shanthan demonstrates the correct technique for cleaning your baby’s gums and teeth at their current stage — cloth wiping, first toothbrush use, toothpaste amount and brushing method.

5

Fluoride Application (if appropriate)

Professional fluoride varnish is applied to erupted teeth where indicated — a quick, painless application that significantly strengthens developing enamel and reduces cavity risk.

Early Childhood Caries — What It Is, Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is the clinical name for severe tooth decay in children under 6 years of age. It is one of the most common childhood diseases globally — and one of the most preventable.

ECC typically starts on the upper front teeth as chalky white spots that progressively turn brown or black. The most common cause is prolonged contact between sugary liquids and the teeth — from night-time bottle feeding, frequent juice consumption, or sippy cups used throughout the day.

Left untreated, ECC causes pain, infection, early tooth loss and nutritional problems from inability to chew. It can also affect the development of permanent teeth forming beneath the gum.

The good news: ECC is almost entirely preventable with the right habits — established early, with professional guidance. Silver Diamine Fluoride and professional fluoride varnish are part of our preventive toolkit.

Habits That Protect Baby Teeth Habits That Increase Cavity Risk
Wipe gums with a damp cloth after feeds from birth Putting baby to sleep with a bottle of milk, formula or juice
Brush with a smear of fluoride toothpaste from first tooth eruption Frequent juice, cordial or sweet drink consumption from a bottle or cup
Transition from bottle to open cup by 12 months Allowing an infant to feed on demand through the night after teeth appear
First dental visit by 12 months Delaying the first dental visit until a problem appears
Professional fluoride varnish every 6 months Avoiding fluoride toothpaste — even a tiny smear is safe and important

Teething — Symptoms, Timeline and When to Seek Help

Teething typically begins between 4 and 7 months of age, starting with the lower central incisors. Most children have a full set of 20 primary teeth by around 2 to 3 years of age.

Normal teething symptoms include: increased drooling, chewing on objects, mild gum swelling, slight irritability and disturbed sleep around the time a tooth is about to break through.

Teething does NOT cause: high fever (above 38°C), diarrhoea, vomiting or serious illness. These symptoms alongside teething indicate an unrelated illness — your paediatrician should be consulted.

For teething discomfort, a clean, chilled (not frozen) teething ring, gentle gum massage with a clean finger, or teething gel approved for infants are safe options. Avoid benzocaine-containing teething gels in children under 2 — these are associated with rare but serious risks.

If a tooth appears severely delayed, dramatically out of position, or if a large swelling develops over an unerupted tooth, book an assessment with Dr. Shanthan at Toothway Dental.

Why an MSc in Child Psychology Makes a Difference for Your Baby

Infant dental care requires more than clinical technique. It requires an understanding of developmental psychology — how infants and toddlers perceive new experiences, how they communicate fear and discomfort, and how to structure an interaction that leaves them feeling safe rather than overwhelmed.

Dr. Shanthan Reddy‘s MSc in Child Psychology and Psychotherapy gives him a formal training in exactly these areas — not as a side interest, but as a postgraduate qualification earned through structured study of child development and therapeutic technique.

In practical terms, this means infant appointments at Toothway Dental are paced differently. The room is designed differently. The language used is calibrated. The outcome — a baby who has had a positive dental experience — is not accidental. It is the product of deliberate clinical design.
