Why Preventive Dentistry Is the Most Important Investment in Your Child’s Dental Health
Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children worldwide — and almost entirely preventable. The combination of regular professional check-ups, fluoride application, sealants and dietary guidance reduces childhood caries rates by more than 70% compared to children receiving no preventive care.
The arithmetic is simple: a preventive check-up costs a fraction of what a filling costs, which costs a fraction of what a root canal costs, which costs a fraction of what extraction and replacement costs. Every rupee spent on prevention saves multiples in treatment.
Beyond cost, prevention protects your child from dental pain, fear and the negative associations that result from treatment under distress. Children who attend regularly for positive, comfortable check-ups from an early age grow into adults who maintain their dental health. Children who only visit when something hurts often carry dental anxiety into adulthood — and the cycle continues.
Preventive Dental Treatments Available at Toothway Dental, Gachibowli
Six-Monthly Dental Check-Up — The Foundation of Preventive Care
A six-monthly check-up at Toothway Dental is a comprehensive assessment covering:
- Each tooth — early decay, developmental defects and erosion
- The gums — inflammation, recession or early gum disease
- The bite and jaw development — early orthodontic concerns
- Soft tissues — screening for any abnormal lesions
- Tooth eruption sequence — confirming permanent teeth are coming through correctly
Parents receive a full report and a clear plan. Check-ups are positive, gentle and comfortable. NOIS sedation is available at every appointment for anxious children.
Professional Fluoride Varnish — Strengthening Enamel at Every Visit
Fluoride varnish is applied to all tooth surfaces at each six-monthly check-up. The professional concentration is significantly higher than toothpaste — delivered in a small amount under clinical supervision, it is both safe and substantially more effective than home fluoride use alone.
Fluoride remineralises early-stage decay, strengthens developing enamel and makes teeth significantly more resistant to acid attack. The application takes 2 minutes and is completely painless. Children should not eat or drink for 30 minutes afterwards.
Fissure Sealants — Protecting the Most Decay-Prone Surfaces
The deep grooves on the biting surfaces of back teeth are where the majority of childhood decay begins — too narrow for a toothbrush bristle to reach.
Dental sealants are thin, tooth-coloured plastic coatings applied to these surfaces. The process is completely painless — no drilling, no injections. The sealant is painted on and hardened with a curing light in minutes.
Sealants are most effective when placed shortly after permanent molars erupt: typically ages 6–7 for first molars and 11–13 for second molars. Dr. Shanthan assesses each child’s caries risk to determine whether sealants are indicated.
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) — No-Drill Cavity Arrest
SDF is applied to early or active cavities to arrest decay without drilling or injections. It kills decay-causing bacteria, hardens the softened tooth structure and prevents the cavity from spreading. No discomfort. Applied in seconds.
The only side effect: treated decay turns dark permanently — harmless and a worthwhile trade-off on baby teeth. On visible permanent teeth, your dentist will discuss whether conventional restoration is more appropriate.
SDF is particularly valuable at Toothway for very young children, children with multiple cavities needing staged treatment, anxious children and children with special healthcare needs.
Dietary Counselling — The Biggest Controllable Factor in Preventing Decay
Diet is the most controllable decay risk factor in children. At Toothway Dental, Dr. Shanthan provides evidence-based dietary guidance tailored to your child’s age, eating habits and caries risk — covering sugar frequency, safe snacking, drinks, feeding patterns in infants and the foods that protect as well as those that damage.
This is a brief, practical 5 to 10 minute conversation at the check-up — giving parents the most impactful changes to make at home before the next visit.
