Root Canal/Endodontic Treatments
Our Endodontists are specialized in diagnosing the infected dental pulp, treating tooth pain by performing root canal treatments.
The Truth About Root Canal Pain — From a Specialist Who Performs It Daily
Root canal has a reputation that predates modern dentistry by several decades. The association with pain comes from an era before effective local anaesthesia, before rotary endodontic instruments, and long before dental operating microscopes. That era is over.
Today, a root canal performed by a specialist with modern anaesthetic techniques is no more painful than having a filling placed. The most discomfort most patients experience is the injection of local anaesthetic — which itself takes seconds. The procedure that follows is pressure, movement and sound — but not pain.
The pain that drives patients to seek root canal treatment — the toothache, the throbbing, the sensitivity — stops when the procedure begins. Most patients leave the appointment significantly more comfortable than when they arrived.
If you are anxious about root canal treatment, we have Nitrous Oxide sedation available at Toothway Dental. It takes effect within minutes, keeps you comfortable and relaxed throughout the appointment, and wears off completely before you leave the clinic.
What Is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment — also called endodontic treatment — is a procedure that removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the internal canal system, and saves the natural tooth from extraction.
Inside every tooth is a space called the pulp chamber, containing nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. When decay, a crack or injury allows bacteria to reach this tissue, the pulp becomes infected and inflamed. Left untreated, the infection spreads to the surrounding bone and can form a painful abscess.
Root canal treatment removes this infected tissue, eliminating the source of pain and infection. The tooth is then sealed and restored — functioning normally and looking completely natural.
A successfully treated tooth can last a lifetime with proper care.
Microscopic Root Canal Treatment — 20x Magnification at Toothway Dental
What most patients don’t know: the outcome of root canal treatment depends heavily on what the endodontist can see.
A dental operating microscope magnifies the working field to 20 times normal size — transforming the endodontist’s view of the root canal system from a narrow, shadow-filled space into a brightly lit, precisely visible environment.
This matters because root canal systems are rarely simple. Teeth have multiple canals, curved roots, narrow isthmuses, lateral branches and — especially in older patients — calcified canals that narrow to a fraction of a millimetre. Under standard magnification, these features are missed. Under a dental operating microscope, they are treated.
At Toothway Dental in Gachibowli, our endodontist performs root canal treatment under the dental operating microscope for all cases — not just complex ones. This is the standard we hold ourselves to, not an upgrade for difficult cases.
The practical result: more complete canal cleaning, more thorough disinfection, better sealing of the root system, and significantly lower rates of treatment failure compared to conventional root canal performed without magnification.
| Factor | Microscopic RCT (Toothway) | Standard RCT |
|---|---|---|
| Magnification | 20x — full canal system visible | Unaided eye or basic loupe at 2–4x |
| Missed canals | Significantly reduced — lateral canals and calcifications identified | Common cause of retreatment — missed canals not visible |
| Crack detection | Hairline cracks identified under magnification | Cracks frequently invisible — diagnosis missed |
| Complex cases | Curved, narrow, calcified canals treated accurately | Often referred away or left undertreated |
| Retreatment rate | Lower — more thorough first-time treatment | Higher — incomplete treatment leads to reinfection |
| Available at Toothway? | Yes — all root canal cases | Not the standard at Toothway |
What Happens During Root Canal Treatment at Toothway Dental
Consultation & X-Ray
Your endodontist examines the tooth and takes a digital X-ray to assess the extent of infection and the anatomy of the root canal system. A treatment plan and cost estimate are provided.
Anaesthesia
Local anaesthetic is administered to fully numb the tooth and surrounding area. Most patients feel a brief sting from the injection — after that, the tooth is completely numb. Nitrous Oxide sedation is available additionally for anxious patients.
Access Opening
A small opening is made through the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. This is performed under the dental operating microscope for precise visualisation.
Pulp Removal & Canal Cleaning
The infected pulp is removed using fine rotary endodontic instruments. The root canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected — under 20x microscope magnification — to remove all infected tissue and bacteria.
Canal Sealing
The cleaned canals are filled and sealed with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, preventing reinfection. The access opening in the crown is temporarily sealed.
Crown Placement
In a subsequent appointment, a dental crown is placed over the treated tooth to restore its strength, shape and function. Most root-canal-treated back teeth require a crown for long-term protection.
Follow-Up
A follow-up X-ray is taken at 6 to 12 months to confirm complete healing. Most treated teeth remain functional and pain-free indefinitely with proper care.
What to Expect After Root Canal Treatment
Some mild soreness or tenderness around the treated tooth is normal for 2 to 5 days following root canal treatment. This is the body’s natural response to the procedure and is well managed with over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.
The tooth may feel slightly different when biting for a few days — this resolves as the surrounding tissues settle. Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated side until your crown is placed.
If you experience severe pain, significant swelling or the original symptoms returning within the first two weeks, contact Toothway Dental promptly — this is uncommon but should be assessed quickly.
DO — After Root Canal
- Take pain relief as needed — ibuprofen or paracetamol
- Continue normal brushing and flossing around the tooth
- Book your crown appointment promptly — do not delay
- Contact Toothway if pain significantly worsens after 5 days
AVOID — After Root Canal
- Hard, crunchy foods on the treated side until crown is placed
- Chewing on the treated tooth with the temporary filling still in place
- Delaying crown placement — the temporary seal is not long-term protection
- Ignoring returning symptoms — reinfection needs early assessment
