Dental Anxiety Is More Common Than You Think — and More Manageable Than You Fear
Dental anxiety is not a character flaw. It is a recognised psychological response — often rooted in a previous negative dental experience, a fear of needles, loss of control, or simply the clinical environment itself. An estimated 36% of people globally experience dental anxiety, and around 12% avoid dental care entirely because of it.
The consequence is predictable: small problems become large ones. A cavity that could have been filled becomes a root canal. A gum problem that could have been treated becomes tooth loss. The very anxiety that keeps people away from the dentist makes the eventual treatment more complex, more costly and — ironically — more anxiety-inducing than the original appointment would have been.
At Toothway Dental, we approach dental anxiety without judgment. Dr. Shanthan Reddy’s MSc in Child Psychology is not just relevant for children — the psychological principles of anxiety management apply equally to adults. And for patients of all ages who need more than reassurance, Nitrous Oxide Inhalation Sedation provides a safe, fast and reversible solution that makes treatment genuinely possible where it previously felt impossible.
What Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation — and What Does It Feel Like?
Nitrous Oxide — commonly called laughing gas or happy gas — is a colourless, odourless gas delivered through a small, lightweight mask placed over the nose. It is mixed with oxygen and inhaled gently during treatment.
Within 2 to 3 minutes, patients typically notice:
- A feeling of warmth and tingling in the hands and feet
- A sense of calm and mild euphoria
- Reduced awareness of sounds, surroundings and discomfort
- A feeling of lightness — and in some cases, mild giddiness (hence ‘laughing gas’)
Crucially, you remain conscious and in full control throughout. You can speak to the dentist, signal if something is wrong, and follow instructions. The dentist adjusts the concentration throughout the appointment to maintain the optimal level of comfort.
When the mask is removed at the end of treatment, the effects clear within 3 to 5 minutes. You feel completely normal within 10 to 15 minutes. You can drive. You can go back to work. Your day continues as planned.
No other form of dental sedation offers this combination of effectiveness and immediacy of recovery. It is why NOIS is the gold standard for anxiety management in dentistry — for children and adults alike.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation for Children — Comfortable Dental Treatment, No Trauma
Children who are anxious, young, have special healthcare needs, or who require longer or more involved dental procedures are the group most likely to benefit from Nitrous Oxide sedation — and the group for which it is most commonly used in specialist paediatric dental practice globally.
At Toothway Dental, NOIS for children is administered by Dr. Shanthan Reddy — a paediatric dentist with an MSc in Child Psychology and formal certification in Nitrous Oxide Inhalation Sedation. He combines clinical expertise with psychological training to create an experience that is not just tolerable but genuinely positive.
Children who have had a calm, comfortable dental experience — even with sedation support — build a different relationship with dental care than those who have been distressed. They are more likely to attend regularly, accept treatment and maintain good oral health throughout their lives. That long-term outcome is what drives how we approach every anxious child who walks through our door, including children with special healthcare needs.
Sedation Dentistry for Adults — No Judgment. Just Care.
Many adults with significant dental anxiety have spent years rationalising why they cannot go to the dentist — ‘I’ll go when it gets worse’, ‘I just need to manage the pain a bit longer’, ‘I’m too embarrassed to say I’m scared.’ These are not failures of willpower. They are the normal responses of a nervous system trying to protect itself.
Toothway Dental does not treat dental anxiety as something patients need to overcome before we can treat them. We treat it as part of the clinical picture — and NOIS is the tool that makes treatment possible without requiring patients to ‘just be brave’.
Adults at Toothway can request Nitrous Oxide sedation for any appointment where it would be beneficial — a filling, a root canal, a wisdom tooth removal, an implant procedure, or simply a check-up that has been avoided for too long. There is no minimum procedure threshold. If sedation helps you attend, it is the right choice.
After treatment, most patients describe the experience as far less stressful than anticipated — and many return for subsequent appointments without requesting sedation at all, having re-calibrated what dental treatment actually feels like.

What Happens at a Nitrous Oxide Sedation Appointment at Toothway Dental
Initial Consultation
At your first appointment, Dr. Shanthan or your treating dentist reviews your medical history, confirms NOIS suitability and discusses the treatment planned. Your concerns are heard and addressed. No procedure takes place without your full understanding and consent.
Arrival & Preparation
You arrive for your treatment appointment normally — no fasting required in most cases. A light meal 2 hours before is recommended. The dental team ensures you feel settled before the mask is placed.
Mask Placement
A small, lightweight nasal mask is placed over your nose. You breathe normally through the nose. The gas — mixed with oxygen — begins to take effect within 2 to 3 minutes.
Treatment
Your dentist carries out the planned treatment while you are calm, comfortable and in full control. The gas concentration is monitored and adjusted throughout the appointment. You can speak and signal at any time.
Mask Removal & Recovery
The nasal mask is removed at the end of treatment. Pure oxygen is administered for 2 to 3 minutes to accelerate clearance. The effects of Nitrous Oxide clear completely within 5 to 10 minutes.
Return to Normal
Within 10 to 15 minutes of the appointment ending, you feel completely normal. You can drive, return to work, collect children from school and continue your day as planned. No recovery period. No escort requirement.
Why Choose Toothway Dental for Sedation Dentistry in Gachibowli?
NOIS Specialist — Not an Occasional Offering
Dr. Shanthan Reddy is a certified NOIS expert — this is not a feature Toothway occasionally offers. It is a specialist service delivered with formal training and consistent technique.
Both Children and Adults
Toothway is one of very few dental clinics in Hyderabad that offers Nitrous Oxide sedation routinely to both children and adults. Most restrict it to one or the other.
Child Psychology Expertise
Dr. Shanthan’s MSc in Child Psychology gives the anxiety management at Toothway a depth that pure dental training cannot provide — for children and for adults who respond to the same evidence-based techniques.
Available for Any Procedure
NOIS at Toothway is available for check-ups, fillings, root canals, surgical extractions, implant procedures and everything in between. No procedure is ‘too routine’ to benefit from sedation if it helps.
